In a move to dethrone the Qantas and Cathay duopoly, decrease pricing on the route and please Virgin frequent flyers, Virgin will begin direct flights between Melbourne and Hong Kong on July 5 of this year.
Flights will operate five days a week, Mon–Thurs and again on Saturday, with the Monday and Wednesday flights leaving mid morning and others shortly after midnight. The return flights will all be overnighters departing Hong Kong before 8pm and arriving in Melbourne early the following day.
Virgin’s Airbus A330’s will service the route, boasting their new business class seats and updated Economy product. Virgin are yet to confirm what lounges will be available for their top tier flyers.
Come October 2017 Cathay will have two A350s servicing the Melbourne to Hong Kong route which should help to bring some competitive pricing for all!
